What is your assessment of the current global political landscape and its impact on wealth management strategies?
Uncertainty has been the word of 2025 so far! Geopolitical fault lines are deepening with the world being divided into competing regions, highlighted by the ‘Liberation Day’ tariffs. At VAR Capital, we are a dynamic yet conservative asset manager and have adapted our strategy to accommodate these changing conditions. For example, we have recently increased our geographic exposure and increased our cash position in early 2025 to provide us with dry powder to seize opportunities in the market.
In your opinion, how have recent policy shifts in major economies like the US, EU, China affected the long-term stability of private wealth?
Policy shifts have highlighted the importance of having a suitable, trusted advisor such as VAR Capital for the long-term. We have an excellent investment team that meticulously follows and understands these policy changes which can help to navigate volatile periods in the market. Government policies are driving a wave of migration, with high-net-worth individuals relocating to hubs like the UAE. Not only is this the migration of people, but also wealth, and managers have to be ready to adapt to these movement patterns.
As we continue to navigate uncertainty in global markets, how are wealth managers adjusting their strategies to preserve and grow clients’ wealth?
We have been increasing our cash position throughout early 2025 by strategically trimming winners and looking to redeploy this into interesting opportunities when they present themselves. As the saying goes…’cash is king’! This is just one example of how our nimble approach can help us act very quickly and deploy capital where we see real value.
How important is diversification in a post-pandemic world, and which asset classes are your clients focusing on?
Diversification is essential in ensuring capital is protected, especially in volatile markets. We primarily invest in single-line bonds and equities and are growing our private capital offering. Even our equity portfolio can be segregated into different buckets, including event-driven investments, which can provide idiosyncratic returns that move independently of market noise.
Sustainability investing has gained traction over the past few years. How are you seeing it affect the portfolios of high-net-worth individuals, and is this trend sustainable?
The younger generation are more mindful about where their money is being invested than previous generations and expect clear communication and transparency around this subject. Apart from providing sustainability reporting, VAR Capital also run educational sessions for the NextGen, with a key topic being sustainability investing. This is a trend we are expecting to continue, especially among those inheriting family wealth.
What are the emerging risks and opportunities that wealth managers should be most aware of?
We have an opportunity to expand our offering to clients beyond what is traditionally known in wealth management. We have previously offered private investments sporadically, and the successes have paved the way to our expansion into private credit. This move reflects a wider trend: clients are increasingly looking for tailored, differentiated opportunities beyond public markets. By staying client-focused, we’re positioning ourselves—and our clients—in a position to navigate both the risks and rewards of an evolving landscape.
How have the needs and expectations of private clients evolved in recent months? Are there any new priorities or concerns they are expressing?
Given the movements in government policy globally, clients want to know how this impacts them personally. For example, following the recent budget announcement in the UK, we assessed each client’s unique circumstances and proactively arranged meetings with trusted accountants and law firms. This responsiveness is different to other firms who opted for generic webinars, we stuck to what we do best: 1-on-1 conversations with a personal touch.
In what ways are clients seeking more personalized wealth management services, and how are you meeting those needs?
Clients want more than a traditional wealth manager. Our holistic approach means our offering extends to participation in private capital deals and tailored debt financing solutions. In the very rare case that we cannot directly meet a client’s needs, we tap into our extensive network to find the right solution, highlighting our client-first philosophy.
With the rise of digital, how are private clients responding to this?
The rise of digital means private clients are closer than ever to their wealth managers. We have taken a different angle in staying connected, with frequent posts on Linkedin; whether this be market commentary to provide our take on recent volatility, or behind-the-scenes pictures from our office, we have chosen to go against the ‘old-school’ approach of wealth management. On top of that, cybersecurity is a top priority for our clients, who expect their data to be protected in today’s digital world where breaches are all too common.
Are there any new technologies or platforms that are making a significant impact on how private wealth is managed or delivered?
AI is everywhere now, and it has started to penetrate our everyday lives, including our operations. We are already testing and implementing AI-powered research tools to enhance our analysis, and we have even used generative AI for images on our website. While AI is boosting our efficiency and innovation, we’re confident it won’t replace the human insight and personalised touch that our clients value anytime soon.
